Birds eat a very large variety of food however many owners merely feed their pet birds seeds and other commercially produced bird foods. This is a mistake as fruit and vegetables should form part of a balanced diet that will help your pet bird live a longer and healthier life.
Birds should eat fruit and veg about twice a day. Fruit and vegetables provide important vitamins that grain diets alone cannot provide.
Birds can eat the following vegetables: radishes, dark greens, parsley, tomato, sweet peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, aubergines, lettuces and cucumbers. Parrots however are allergic to avocadoes – and cannot be fed too many onions or mushrooms. At least one daily vegetable you feed your bird should be a dark and leafy green. All vegetables must be washed before being fed, obviously!!
Fruits should be between 5-10% of a bird’s diet – if your bird gets too accustomed to fruit it may not want anything else. Birds can eat apples (chopped up into small pieces obviously!), berries, kiwi fruit, mangoes, pineapple chunks, cherries, banana chunks, grapes and plums. However make sure to remove the seeds and cores of fruits such as apples. Try to remove the skin on some fruits such as plums – they can eat the flesh but not the skin. Perhaps give your bird some nutrition and entertainment at the same time by feeding them orange segments – they must tear open the outer skin to be able to eat it, and it can actually give them some entertainment!
