A nest of eggs may get abandoned by its mother for many reasons, for example, the mother bird may be dead or scared off so will not return. Do not interfere unless you are certain no birds are returning. If you watch throughout the day you will be able to determine if it is an abandoned nest. However, even if it is, it is not good to interfere unless it is necessary because nature has its own way which we can not match.
You have 2 options that you could take. One way would be to take the eggs and try and nurture them, although be aware this can not always be successful, or leave them and let nature run its course. Either could be successful or unsuccessful as you will not know what stage the eggs are at - they could be big enough that they are ready to hatch.
If you decide to look after the eggs, you will need to incubate them at a high temperature. You may need to buy special resources for this. But this step is usually crucial for their survival.
Once the eggs have hatched you will need to provide them with food regularly. Research the food they will need, for example high protein foods, and find a specific store that will cater to your needs for this type of bird food to ensure they get the correct nutrients. This will consume a lot of time and work as in the wild baby birds are fed 3 – 4 times an hour.
Once you have taken on the role to hatch the eggs and nurse the birds, they will not be able to survive in the wild. They will have natural instincts but there are elements that are taught by the parents and as this cannot be done, it makes them extremely vulnerable to predators. Therefore you may have to hand rear them. Make sure you go into this process knowing that this is a possible option.
If you want to help however and are not able to incubate the eggs or raise the birds, you can try and move the nest to a safer place. For example somewhere more sheltered from predators and weather conditions. This will give them an increased rate of survival.
Most people say to leave the eggs alone as it is better for the birds. If they do survive then they will learn nature’s way and have a better chance in the long term. Sometimes mothers might be gone for longer than usual so it is better to leave the eggs in the nest as they may not return for a couple of days – this is not extremely common but can happen.
Although it may seem helpful and kind to help a bird if you find it alone, you can do some things to help but others can be more of a hindrance so make sure you know this before interfering.
