I have hybrid chicks, barnevelder chicks, light sussex chicks, buff orpington chicks and white silkie chicks hatching in the next month or so, I'm placing this advert before they hatch, so that I can assess the demand for them, and so you have the opportunity to buy them as day old chicks, so you can raise them yourself.
The light sussex chicks are the offspring of my breeding group of four hens and a cockerel. They are fed on non-GM feed, and are allowed to free-range, with access to an acre large wood. The light sussex is a heritage dual purpose breed (good for both eggs and meat, with an average weight of between 3 and 4 kg) breed, perfect for beginner chicken keepers, with a calm and friendly temperament, and laying 240-260 cream or light brown eggs a year,
The barnevelder chicks are the offspring of my neighbour's breeding flock, who free-range in a large paddock. The barnevelder itself is a fantastic dual-purpose heritage breed, laying 150-200 dark brown eggs a year (3-4 a week), and it has a perfect temperament, calm and friendly. I myself have a barnevelder cockerel, and he is the sweetest cockerel I've met, non-aggressive and happy to eat out of my hand.
The hybrid chicks are the offspring of my laying flock, and are a cross-breed between my barnevelder cockerel, and six hybrid rescue hens (they are ex-battery hens, from the British Hen Welfare Trust). I've already hatched some chicks from this flock, and they turned out to be friendly and inquisitve, happy to eat out of my hand (perhaps too happy...), with unique feather patterns. Their parents are fed on non-GM feed, and free-range in a large paddock, with access to a few small trees, under-which they can dust bathe. The hens have never gone broody, and lay 6 eggs a week.
The Buff Orpington and white silkie hatching eggs are coming from hatching eggs I’ve bought from other breeders, but I’ve made sure that the breeders selected have good quality stock.
Prices are:
-hybrid chicks are £4 each
-pure-breed barnevelder and light sussex chicks are £6 each
-the buff orpington chicks are £7 each
-the white silkie chicks are £10 each
Please be aware that the hatching process doesn’t always go to plan, and I might find that none of the light sussexes hatch successfully, for example. I’m raising money for a 6th Form A-Level trip to Borneo, so any offers would be much appreciated. You’re welcome to see how my birds are kept, and feel free to ask any questions.
