    How to feed doves

    A guide to dove diets

Doves are seed eaters. However unlike parrots and other hookbills they do not “husk” their seeds; rather, they swallow them whole. They do not leave empty shells so you will be able to see when they need more food.

However if you can’t find dove food – which can be difficult to buy – parakeet food can substitute it. Doves will switch their preferences instantly.

Because of the fact that they eat their seeds whole, doves might need grit, which they can use to grind the food up in their insides. Sprinkle a little bit on the floor of their coop.

Baby doves are fed by their parents on “pigeon milk”. You can assist this process by giving the parents extra nestling foods during the rearing period.
