Now we are heading towards the colder months, you need to be prepared to ensure you have everything you need for your birds. So here is a guide to keep your birds warm and healthy throughout the winter.
To provide extra heat for your bird, a lamp is a great way. It gives that extra warmth on the especially cold days. If you have many birds then multiple lamps may be needed if you choose this as your heat source, although with more birds, the more heat there will be between them.
An easy and obvious way to keep your birds warm is simply using your central heating, however this may be more money and work than it’s worth. Using the heating doesn’t allow you to control the heat around the house as tightly as it may be needed. Although your aim is to provide heat, it is possible for your bird to overheat. To ensure the heat is at the right temperature, the condition of your bird would need to be monitored. And this extra heating may be money that you could save by using other methods; however it is the easiest way to go.
A simple move is to find a suitable place to keep the bird’s cage. This place would not be by a winter or door, and not by a radiator. Placing the cage by a door or window in the winter would not be appropriate, especially when warmth is your aim, for the bird’s health. And sitting the cage right next to a radiator can be dangerous and make the bird ill. Finding a dry, warm place, perhaps sheltered by a piece of furniture, would be ideal.
Another good tip would be to cover the cage at colder periods, such as, during the night. However this may not be for everyone as some birds may not like this and feel secluded; this will be something else you will have to work out independently for each of your birds.
Putting some kind of insulation in the cage is also very useful. Something temporary that you can remove once we move back into the spring. This does not have to cover the whole of the cage, but will really help to keep the heat in.
