Emus are very large birds native to Australia, but they can be kept as pets anywhere. They usually grow to between 5 and 6 feet in height, so be warned that you will need a lot of space to keep them.
You should purchase a pair of emu chicks, from a reputable breeder, rather than just one solitary emu.
You will need to provide a brooding house for emu chicks, as well as a rearing pen. Chicks should be fed 20 percent protein for the first two months of their lives to help them grow; then switch to a grower food until they are over a year old.
Emu chicks need plenty of time outdoors.
The pen you buy should be large enough for your emus – this is where needing lots of space will come in. The pen should be at least 30 by 100 feet in size. It should also have fencing that is at least 6 feet high, as fences shorter than this are easily jump-able by emus.
The pen should have a shelter constructed inside it to protect your emus from the rain, or from intense cold.
You will need to buy quality ratite feed for emus. You can buy this at good farm supply shops.
Emu breeding season usually begins in summertime and laying season begins around October-time.
Adult emus have sharp long claws and peck very hard, so make sure to be safe around them at all times.
