Pigeons are known for many things and raised for many different reasons – racing, homing, and sometimes just for companionship. They are bred in a variety of shapes and colours and pigeons for sale make great pet birds. However if you plan to show your pigeon, as many pigeon owners do, it will need to be bathed first. You will need to do this regularly. Read on to find out how to give your pigeon a bath.
Buy a bird tray that can fit several pigeons at once. Choose a tray that isn't more than seven inches deep and less than twelve inches across. Fill the tray with three or four inches of clean water. Use the shallower depth for smaller pigeon breeds. Use lukewarm water – definitely ensure your pigeon is not bathed in hot or cold water.
To accustom your pigeons slowly to bathing, offer them the water and show them it before you bathe them in it. Don't allow the pigeons to have access to bathing for the five days before the show, as the water removes essential feather oils that are crucial for maintaining a glossy appearance. Spot-clean pigeons to remove staining (especially on white feathers). Use a mild shampoo (a non-medicated pet shampoo works well). Dampen a paper towel or soft cloth with warm water and a small amount of shampoo. Hold the pigeon and dab at the stained feather(s). Rinse the cleaned area with a spray of water or a wet clean cloth, avoiding the bird's face. Let the bird dry naturally. Use a livestock-formulated, waterless cleaning spray for last-minute spot-cleaning.
