Amazon parrots for sale are beautiful and friendly companions – however, breeding them is another matter entirely and can be quite difficult as they are often slow to do so. If you want your pet Amazon parrots to breed with one another you will need: at least two of them (obviously!) and a lot of patience.
Make sure you purchase young and healthy Amazon parrots or else there is almost no point trying to breed them. Amazon parrots cannot be visually sexed so you need proof of a DNA test – any reputable breeder will offer this so you know you are buying a male and a female. House your breeding pair in a suitable cage. Most breeders use aviaries at least 10 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet high. The walls should be made of 1 inch by half-inch 1.2 to 1.3 mm gauge wire. The nesting box should be roughly 9 to 10 inches square and 30 to 40 inches deep, depending on the size of the parrots, obviously. Line the nest box with sawdust, newspaper shreddings, grass or straw. Don’t use any toxic wood shavings such as pine or cedar.
To prevent boredom (which will lead to depression which will in itself lead to a distinct unwillingness to breed), make sure to stock the cage full of parrot toys and perches. Parrots need a certain amount of natural light every day, as well as a high-quality, healthy diet – including seed mixture, apples, bananas, carrots and pears. To keep your female healthy give her calcium supplements or put a calcium-rich cuttlebone in the cage.
Check on the nest at least once a day. Once the female lays her eggs, you can remove them for incubation (most breeders recommend doing this) or wait until the eggs hatch and them remove the chicks so you can hand rear them. Female Amazon parrots typically lay about two or three eggs, in springtime.
