A peacock – or, more correctly a peafowl, which refers to both the peacock and the peahen – can be a great bird for sale, particularly the males which are known and admired for their bright and colourful plumage. However if you plan to buy peacocks in the UK you must make sure you have a proper habitat set up for them, as it is cruel and unhealthy to expect a peacock to live in an environment not suited to it. Peafowl need habitats full of vegetation and greenery, just like their natural homes.
The peacock pen needs to be big enough for the males to display their long, fancy tails. The general consensus is that a pen needs to be, at the minimum, 10-feet wide and 6-feet tall. The pen should also be approximately 100 square feet. Use plywood to build the structure and use strong netting for the ceiling. Cut the plywood according to the height and length of the pen that you will be making.
Insulate the pen. During the winter months, peafowl need to stay warm. Use a soft material, such as cloth to insulate the pen. Ensure that the material is safe for the peafowl. The pen needs to be rain and snow proof. Apply plastic to the inside of the pen to prevent rain and water from melting snow from coming in.
Place foliage and small tress around the pen. Peacocks like to go into forests with deep bushes, grass and trees. You can purchase foliage from a garden shop or a plant store.
Place their food near or in their pen. National Geographic states that peacocks are ground feeders; they eat insects and plants. They can also eat nuts, if provided. You can grow various non-poisonous plants before you get the peacocks.
