Moustached parrots or moustached parakeets are colourful birds that get their names from the black colourations above and below their beaks. Moustached parrots grow to between 13 and 16 inches long. They can live for up to 25 years. Also they are considered calmer and less demanding than other species of parrots. However the chicks, like all parrot chicks, do require lots of specialised care.
You should pair the male and female moustached parrots together at as young an age as possible. Between the age of two and three, they should be ready to breed. Place a large nest box in the habitat, be it a cage or your lounge, wherever you keep your parrots. The nest box should be opposite the opening to the cage. This will make the birds feel more secure. Fill the bottom of the box with a layer of wood shavings, preferably pine shavings.
The parrots must be healthy in order to breed so it is crucial that you give them a healthy and nutritious diet. This should consist of fresh fruit and vegetables alongside a pellet diet. Also try adding vitamin supplements such as calcium and other minerals to make sure the birds have healthy bones. Cuttlebones placed in the area can be a great source of minerals. Also, place soft pieces of wood in the habitat. Some female parrots and parakeets feel the need to chew as they get ready to breed. The chewing can even stimulate breeding in some cases.
Now you should leave your male and female bird alone as they prefer to mate and breed in private! This will usually occur between December and April.
