If your bird has broken its leg we recommend that you take it to a vet as soon as possible. However in some situations this may not be convenient in which case read on to learn how to care for a bird with a broken bone.
First of all, any bird with a broken leg – in fact, any bird with any sort of ailment whatsoever – should be isolated from other birds for its own well-being. Put it in a different cage; some recommend to use a glass tank such as the ones that might be used for reptiles or amphibians, as this way there is no chance the bird will injure itself further by trying to climb on the cage bars.
Tape perches to the bottom of the tank using a strong tape. Birds need a place to grip. They can't stand flat on their feet for long periods of time, especially with a broken leg.
Make sure the bottom of the cage or tank is lined with comfortable material just in case the bird falls off their perch. Place a dish of water and a dish of food on the bottom of the tank. It is vital that your bird gets the right nutrients in order to begin recovery.
Make sure the bird has enough heat to keep it comfortable so it can heal – place a heat lamp over the tank.
DO NOT EVER attempt to re-set the bird’s leg by yourself.
