Scientists claim the Western Ground Parrot is in danger of extinction, as one of the worlds rarest birds

According to scientists from the University of Adelaide in Australia, the Western Ground Parrot (which lives in Western Australia) is now amongst the world's rarest birds. After a steep decline in numbers over the last two decades, there are now only roughly 110 of the parrots, mainly confined to one national park. By analysing DNA from museum specimens - some of them over 150 years old - the scientists have concluded that the western ground parrot is actually an entirely different species to the eastern ground parrot, and therefore in critical need of conservation.
