Wildlife experts said they would be able to return a rare habitat to its former glory after buying a section of land for £1.

Durham Wildlife Trust acquired the land at its Stanley Moss nature reserve, near Sunniside, for the nominal sum from developer the Banks Group.

It said it would allow it to rehydrate the area, which is degraded peat bog, by blocking up old forestry drains.

The area supports a wide range of wildlife including plants and birds.

Trust reserves manager Mark Richardson said: "Durham Wildlife Trust intends to restore Stanley Moss back to its former glory by reinstating the water table in areas where the bog has dried out.

"The acquisition of this further land adjacent to Stanley Moss is the final piece in the jigsaw and safeguards its future for generations to come."
