The results are in from the Great Backyard Bird Count, a joint project of the USA’s National Audubon Society and Bird Studies of Canada, similar to the UK’s Big Garden Birdwatch, run by the RSPB. An estimated 60,000 North American birdwatchers took part in the four-day event this February, identifying 596 species and sighting 11.4 million individual birds! Two new species have also been identified – the Brown Shrike in northern California, and a Common Chaffinch in Newfoundland, Canada – both species being very far from their usual habitats.
