Hundreds of bird watchers have visited a coastal Hampshire village in the hope of seeing a rare sparrow.

An adult male Spanish sparrow, thought to be from Spain, Turkey or North Africa, has moved into the gardens and hedgerows at Calshot.

It is the first sighting in the area for almost two decades.

Since arriving it has mated with native birds producing hybrid species, according to the Hampshire Ornithological Society.

Keith Betton, from the society, said: "This sparrow is living happily here with other house sparrows."
