Peregrine Falcons to be Monitored
Animal health experts have announced a plan to take samples of DNA from newly-born peregrine falcon chicks to try to catch unscrupulous bird dealers in Cornwall. If any are found in suspicious circumstances in captivity, the DNA samples will aid the identification of the bird of prey in question. There around 50 breeding pairs on the Duchy’s north coast. A spokesperson from the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency claimed that there had been significant issues with unscrupulous bird dealing around the UK, and particularly in Cornwall. Devon and Cornwall has been named the third worst area of the UK for the killing of birds of prey, according to the RSPB.
