The new Wildlife and Natural Environment Act 2011, recently passed by the UK parliament, means that those who mistreat birds could be in line for a jail sentence for the first time. Prison terms of up to six months and higher fines of up to £5,000 will help combat crimes including the illegal collecting of rare birds' eggs, the poisoning of birds of prey and crimes against other forms of wildlife, such as badger baiting.
