Mystery Box Turns Up At Wildlife Centre
A sealed cardboard box was mysteriously dumped at the front gates of a Cumbrian wildlife centre this week, leading to confusion from the staff. Workers at the Knoxwood rescue centre were surprised to open it and find 18 fledgling pigeons within! According to Emma Scott, who runs the centre alongside her father George and a group of volunteers, claimed there were no clues as to how the box got there nor who had left it. Though some of the birds were a little skinny, and bedraggled, all are expected to survive and eventually be released.
Before then, however, Emma will have to hand-rear all of the pigeons, which won’t be easy. “With this number of birds we’re looking at about five pints of liquid feed a day in four or five feeding sessions, each taking about 20 minutes,” Emma says. “There are already pigeons that hang about the centre, so these birds will probably join that flock when they’re old enough.”
