Midlands Pigeon Thief Apprehended
Racing pigeons that were worth around £3000 – as well as a prize orange parakeet – were taken by thieves from elderly pigeon fanciers in Sheldon near Birmingham. Luckily, one of the victims’ sons made a sighting by chance of the house where the birds were being kept – belonging to one Graham Hughes, a 24 year old unemployed heroin addict. The birds were returned to their rightful owners and Mr. Hughes has been sentenced to 46 weeks’ imprisonment suspended for two years. Iain Willis, prosecuting, said when police went to the address they found hundreds of pigeons in Hughes’ back garden of which at least 87 were stolen.
