Iowa Man Needs More Help At Parrot Sanctuary
Mike Hutchison, founder and director of the nonprofit Iowa Parrot Rescue Centre in the small town of Letts, Iowa, has expressed to local journalists his need for more help in order to care for the 77 parrots he is caring for at the centre. Hutchison, a Vietnam war veteran and retired history teacher from local Muscatine High School, said his volunteer work is a full-time job, and he could use some more help.
Mr. Hutchison had already been running the Parrot Rescue for nine years when he used a $65,000 donation from some residents of nearby Des Moines to build a large complex for the birds in 2007.
He then raised another $20,000 — about $11,000 of it from local donors and another $20,000 by taking out a loan on his mortgage.
Some are permanent fixtures, such as Cosmo, a 21-year-old Patagonian conure, the second-oldest of all the parrots.
