Dumfries lost lovebird 'lucky to survive'
An appeal has been launched to find the owner of a lovebird which was found close to death in Dumfries town centre.
A concerned passer-by spotted the bird on the ground near the Midsteeple last week.
She put him in a box before calling the Scottish SPCA, who helped nurse him back to health.
Insp Janet Proudlock said lovebirds were normally kept in pairs and the charity hoped to return him to his owner as soon as possible.
The bird has been named Greg, after the Greggs cake box he was put in by his rescuer.
Insp Proudlock said: "Poor Greg looked unlikely to survive the night and was unable to perch, but I fed him some warm sugar water and kept him warm overnight with a hot water bottle and by morning he had made a great recovery.
"He is a cheerful little bird although he is quite skittish so he may not have had much handling.
"However, many people keep lovebirds in pairs so we're very keen to return him to his owner, particularly if he has a mate who is pining for him."
If nobody comes forward, the Scottish SPCA will try to find him a new home.
