Birdlife Malta and the German based, Campaign Against Bird Slaughter, undertook a two week operation in Malta to uncover the shocking truth about the Maltese illegal hunting trade.

The groups found over 137 carcases of birds in Mizieb, Malta. Some of the carcases found included harriers, buzzards, falcons, herons and other birds of prey, some of which had been left for months to rot.

The groups have called to the Maltese government to take action against hunters to prevent scenes like this ever being discovered again. The current lack of police intervention has shocked people across the continent and has highlighted the scale of illegal hunting in the country.

Hundreds of birds fly over the county on route to Africa from Europe which allows the killing fenzy to spirral out of control. The funding of the groups is limited which means only a small area of Malta can be covered leaving the final condemnations to the Maltese police and government. Future operations like this are planned although the groups will never be able to fully eradicate the problem without the co-operation of the Maltese officials.
