Champion Pigeon Sells for Record Sum
A champion racing pigeon has been sold for a record amount of £16,700 to a buyer in the Netherlands – despite the fact that it has broken its wing and has been unable to fly for the last two years! Former owner Kerry Mellonby is amazed at the amount Champion Treble Six, the pigeon, has sold for. Champion Treble Six – considered unlucky by some because of his number, 666, but lucky by others for the same reason – is six years old and was retired in 2009 following a wing injury. However, prior to the injury the pigeon had won over 20 races for its owner. Mr Mellonby said the new owners are aware that the pigeon can't fly but are instead probably hoping it will breed new winners. Champion Treble Six was sold in an online auction that was extended three hours past its original finishing time because of the huge amount of interest both in the UK and on the Continent.
