Songbird competitions become a multi-million pound industry in Indonesia

With all the stories about cockfighting currently in the news, it’s nice to hear about the latest craze pitting bird against bird – songbird contests in Indonesia, where trainers compete to see whose songbird has the most interesting song! The popular hobby has now become a multi-million pound industry in the Southeast Asian country. Trainers and enthusiasts are willing to bet fortunes on the musically talented birds. The industry now contributes over £50m a year to Indonesia’s economy. The most famous songbird to have competed was an orange-headed thrush, Zemorana, who was eventually sold for an amazing £30,000!
