Birds strikes rise at Salt Lake Airport

For the second night in a row, planes have to call in emergencies with the Salt Lake tower after hitting birds during final approach. So ABC 4 Brian’s Carlson investigated just how bad the bird problem is getting.

It's happening more than you might think. Twice Monday night, once again Tuesday night - two hawks struck a small Cessna plane on the windshield and the wing. If these birds hit the right part of the plane, it can cause serious damage, putting the plane and the people on board at risk.

The problem is, so do the birds. Staff who deal with our feathered friends at the Salt Lake Airport said this year has been the worst in nearly 15 years. According to the FAA from August 2010 to 2011, planes in Salt Lake have struck 140 birds. Since January staff caught over 300 fowl like a red tailed hawk, and can't count how many others they've scared away.
