130 African Grey parrots are seized when a woman tries to smuggle them over African borders

130 African Grey parrots were seized earlier in January on the border between Uganda and the wartorn Democratic Republic of the Congo. They were being transported by a woman who had fed them alcohol-laced sugarcane to make them drowsy for the trip!!! These birds can fetch up to £500 on the black market which means they are a popular choice for smuggling.

The African Grey parrots are found in the rainforests of west and central Africa and sometimes live up to 70 years old when held in captivity.
