Description [edit]

History

The Pekin Robin is native to East Asia, specifically, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Vietnam. Populations can also be found on the Hawaiian Islands. They are usually found in the forested areas of these countries and they live in large flocks, separating themselves into pairs during the breeding season. %%AFC-ADVERT%%

The Pekin Robin is one of the most popular soft bill birds to be kept as a pet because of their desirable looks and impressive singing abilities. Although Pekin Robins are not considered endangered, population levels are being closely monitored due to intense levels of trapping and trading.

Pekin Robin Diet & Behaviour

The Pekin Robin’s diet mainly consists of different fruits and insects. They will also occasionally eat nectar and vegetables as well. In captivity, they can be fed small amounts of canary seed and this can make a good addition to the Pekin Robin’s diet.

The Pekin Robin is generally a very friendly and sociable bird. They are very peaceful and rarely fight with each other, even during the breeding season. They enjoy the company of other birds and love to explore their cages as much as possible. A Peking Robin that is hand reared from a chick can be very tame.

The male Pekin Robin is famous for singing, which he does during the breeding season. They are monogamous but the male will stay display to his female. A full grown adult measures roughly 15cm tall.

Keeping Pekin Robins

If you intend to keep Pekin Robins, it is best to use an aviary and keep more than one individual. Pekin Robins live in groups so it is not particularly tricky to start breeding. As with all birds, the bigger the aviary the better and a good size for a pair of Pekin Robins is 2m x 1m x 2m. Pekin Robins love water and bathing so make sure you put a bird bath in one corner of the aviary.

Putting plants in your aviary is very good for the mental and physical health of the Pekin Robins. They enjoy secluded areas and it will mimic their natural habitat, they will also enjoy eating the insects that are attracted to the plants. Pekin Robins are highly sociable and benefit from living with other birds, even those not of their own kind.
