Description [edit]

If you are browsing online for birds of prey for sale, then you might want to consider American kestrels. As the name suggests, this intelligent bird of prey is native to North and South America, and is one of the smallest members of the falcon family.

Learn more about American kestrels by reading the information provided below.

Birds of Prey In Profile: American Kestrels

1.    As mentioned above, American kestrels are amongst the smallest of all raptor breeds, and are similar in size to breeds such as the American robin and the large thrush. They can range in length from 9-11 inches and with a wingspan of 20-24 inches. It can be difficult to distinguish between males and females when witnessing these kestrels in the wild.

2.    However, one way in which you can easily determine the sex of an American kestrel close up is wing colouring. Males exhibit a blue-grey hue on the wings, whilst females have a back with dark brown barring. A reddish tale also helps to mark out the female American kestrel from the male.

3.    American kestrels will require plenty of open space in order to thrive, so anybody considering the purchase of this bird of prey should ponder the housing and exercising of the bird carefully. These birds of prey also tend to appreciate perches and cavities in order to hunt and nest.

4.    Prospective buyers of American kestrels should bear in mind that these raptors do not tend to benefit from longevity – records suggest the birds can live as much as 12 years, however most kestrels in captivity tend to live from 5-7 years.

5.    Finally, in terms of feeding, American kestrels will tend to feast on small creatures, including grasshoppers, lizards, dragonflies, mice and voles. In some cases, a kestrel may feast on other small birds. Interestingly, despite their diminutive size in relation to other birds of prey, American kestrels are not averse to opportunistically snatching the prey of other raptors.
