Many people dream of owning a talking parrot and there are many types of pet parrot that are capable of learning and mimicking human speech and other sounds.     Cockatiels are more commonly known for their whistling and their ability to mimic environmental sounds; that said though cockatiels have been known to be able to mimic human speech and with plenty of time and attention it is certainly possible to turn these popular pet birds into talking parrots.

     

    4. Budgerigar

     

    The humble budgie is one of the most popular pet birds in the world and is easily one of the top 5 talking parrots. The male variety of these pet birds are usually much more likely to become a talking parrot than the females, in fact a budgie called Puck currently holds the record amongst talking parrots for having the largest vocabulary.

     

    3. Macaws

     

    There are actually lots of different species of Macaws and nearly all of them are capable of learning large amounts of human speech. A talking parrot like a macaw will cost lots of money to buy but their colourful plumage and friendly personalities is often considered worth it.     African grey parrots are undoubtedly the most intelligent birds on the planet and as talking parrots are sometimes able to understand concepts such as context and even the idea of ‘zero’. African greys are very popular as pets as they are very likely to become a talking parrot. African greys make excellent pets because of their intelligence, friendly temperament and of their smaller size (comparative to a pet parrot such as a macaw).
