For many, the appeal of owning an exotic bird comes from watching these intelligent creatures mimic everyday speech and sounds.

However, anyone looking to buy an exotic bird needs to note that not all parrots and budgies have the ability to talk - so in this guide, we take a look at the most talented talking birds available in the world of aviculture. %%AFC-ADVERT%%

Talking Parrots and Talking Budgies - The Top Ten

    10. Macaws

These beautiful parrots aren't the most natural talkers, but with a little training they can replicate everyday sounds and simple phrases. Much of the joy of these birds comes from their noisy nature - but mostly from their squawking rather than talking.

    9. Lories

Lories offer a lot more clarity than macaws, and although they tend not to be as loud as the latter breed, if crisp talking parrots are your primary interest, these delightful birds may prove a wiser long term investment.

    8. Cockatoos

Cockatoos will require plenty of training to learn to speak, and although they may not offer the best clarity of speech, they are sociable birds that will enjoy making an impression on the family home.

    7. Cockatiels

These birds are excellent mimics, and can provide plenty of fun as pets - although it's important to bear in mind that only male cockatiels tend to have the capability to speak.

    6. Eclectus

These parrots take a far more relaxed approach to life than other parrots - but they don't waste a breath, and can prove very talkative if placed in the right environment. A little work might be needed to encourage them to open up, but once they do, these talking birds can provide plenty of joy.

    5. Indian Ringnecks

Intelligence is the predominant trait of these extraordinary birds - they can mimic both words and sounds and can perform plenty of party tricks.

    4. Amazon Parrots

Amazons are natural-born show offs and simply crave attention all day long. However your interaction will be rewarded with plenty of talking and singing. These birds can be hard work and can live for an exceptionally long time, so you'll need commitment to own these birds.

    3. Bugerigars

They may be a little smaller than some of the other birds featured on this page, but talking budgies can really transform a family home. These birds don't offer the best clarity of expression, but for effort alone, they deserve serious consideration.

    2. Quaker Parrrots

These birds are slightly different from other birds with speech abilities in that their main talent is imitating laughter - and this talent can actually encourage even more laughter around the household from both family members and the birds themselves.

    1. African Greys

Arguably the smartest of all bird species, the African Grey breed is renowned for outstanding talking abilities. They can pick up sounds and phrases very quickly, a trait which probably makes them the best of all talking birds in aviculture.
